Pearson Brothers Tire Center rebounds after deflating impact of COVID-19
Birmingham, Ala. — Faith, family and community are the hallmarks of a successful business, according to Shelby Pearson, who has owned and operated Pearson Brothers Tire Center in the North Birmingham Community for over a decade.
It’s a mark of pride for almost any business to stay open and serve its community for so many years. Pearson credits his faith and family for the longevity and success of Pearson Brothers Tire Center. Since its beginning, Pearson Brothers has worked tirelessly to place the customer at the center of its business model.
“Whenever customers come into our business, we not only aim to provide their tire service needs, but to make sure they leave our business in a better frame of mind than how they may have entered into the shop,” Pearson said. “Oftentimes, customers come into the shop with what seems like the weight of the world on their shoulders, and it’s usually a kind word or smile that completely alters their day.”
His faith compels him to treat people the way he would like to be treated. “While we focus on everything related to your tire, from rotating and balancing to fixing a flat to installing new tires, our main goal is to make sure our customers leave satisfied with their decision to do business with us,” Pearson said.
While previous years provided substantive growth for Pearson Brothers Tire Center, 2020 has presented a challenge as COVID-19 hit the small business community hard and heavy. At the pandemic’s peak, Pearson Brothers had to eliminate most of its staff for about two months. That was one of Pearson’s hardest moments as an entrepreneur.
The BhamStrong emergency relief fund ultimately helped Pearson navigate through the unprecedented time. The program was launched last spring through the city of Birmingham’s Office of Innovation and Economic Opportunity.
The local loan fund included $1.2 million approved by the City Council and an additional $1 million from area businesses. BhamStrong oversaw the public-private fund along with the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham and the Birmingham Business Resource Center. At least 85 local businesses received help to get them through challenges created by COVID-19.
BhamStrong funds allowed Pearson to bring back 75 percent of his team to begin serving the needs of Birmingham customers again.
“Right now, we are swimming on our own due to the Birmingham Strong fund,” Pearson said. “We are now able to operate day to day and out of the slump we were once in.”
Pearson is grateful for customers who have returned to patronize his business.
“At the end of the day we are in business to make a living, but it’s not the most important aspect of being a business owner; it’s all about connecting with the people that patronize the business,” he said. “Be good to your customers, and they will be good to your business.”
